I completely changed hair shading method for this one. My previous ones looked like a blob instead of wavy ones. I realized it after I created sign.
It's still soft cell shading, but it took me one night to learn how to use pen tools in Photoshop. I used my favorite main character from my manga (Hisen) since I knew that I wouldn't do a sloppy job if it's that character. I would make sure that he looks good in illustrations
Method I used before: eraser (soft round brush with different opacity) soft round brush smudge
Method I used for this shading: pen tool gradient tool clipping mask spray paint with hard round brush smudge
Pen tool took the longest to learn. Other than digital water color on clothes, everything else for coloring was done in Photoshop. I didn't put too much bright colors for this character to match with the vector shapes.
Inspirations: - Works of other DA deviants who used soft cell shading (made me realize that my past method needed a correction) - How-to-do-soft-shading-for-dummies-kinda-book - Hinata Masuda (CG artist) who does cool photomanipulation of models in magazines - a photo I saw in Tokyo Modern Art Museum I saw yesterday (a red and black tent) - pen tool tutorial ([link])
Softwares Used: Photoshop CS2 Comic Studio Ex 4.0 Corel Painter X
Yep... I spent a bit more time on hair than usual. I guess I need that for the future illust.
