It's usually eaten at home and never served as a whole like in expensive Japanese restaurant that might use this kind of plate. In addition, heat from broiled fish would probably melt or discolor lacquer and 螺鈿 (raden) (decorative pieces of a sea shell) and damage the gold foil.


However, I just wanted it something more than just a slab of broiled fish without adding too much things on the side.


I used my own photos for broiled fish and used ~ a total of hundred photos as a reference for color + shape. I think I stared at most of them since I was hungry.


I could have created more realistic painting with more time involved, but I think I would start eating my laptop's monitor and wanted to finish it before the birthday.


No additional textures were used, and I painted all of these for the first time in my life. I did not use Photoshop at all for this one (but could be painted in any software, really).



Even though it might by slightly off from reality- plates and all, this is what I would usually envision Sanma since it's yummy.
